We selfishly based these gift guides on our own kids, which is why I’m writing an 8-year-old guide. A lot of these suggestions are based off of what my son wants. Check out all of our suggestions below and be sure to add yours in the comments!

I was a little stumped when it came to 8 year old gift ideas at first. My own 8 year old is at a weird gifting age. He wants big things but the small things still bring him joy too. For example, he has “RV” and “a map” on his list currently. His interests are all over the place and while we won’t be getting him everything on this list, these are all things I know he’d love.
8 Year Old Gift Ideas
For The Tech Lover
A real laptop has been on the list for awhile and I think this year is finally the year. From homework to Minecraft, this model has just enough for an 8 year old and has the capabilities of parental controls for my peace of mind.
If your kiddo isn’t quite ready for a laptop but you want to start teaching digital literacy and safety, we love our Kindle Fire kid version as starter technology.
Gaming consoles will always be a top pick for our tech lover. We aren’t quite ready for PS5 or XBox but the Nintendo Switch has been a great starter console, if you will. This Animal Crossing version is the perfect gift! Pro tip: if a gaming console is on your list, make sure you buy it early, they are a hot ticket item and will sell out fast.

If you’re looking for a unique gift, we recently got the boys drawn as Minecraft characters and they turned out SO cute. We plan to frame it for their room. This is the exact listing we purchased and the seller was quick and responsive. Highly recommend.
For The Active Kid
One of the most popular gifts of the season is definitely hoverboards. This hoverboard has LED light up wheels, can hold up to 185 lbs, and goes 6 mph! Any bets on who falls off first, kids or parents? Ha!
Do your kids constantly complain there’s nothing to do? Same. I’m always on the hunt for off-screen “busy” activities. This behind the door basketball hoop will be a great boredom killer.
We love legos in this house. This Minecraft Lego set is going to be a hit.
Games are always a great gift and I think he’s finally at the age where Guess Who and Battleship might actually be fun!
For The Book Lover
Books are the best stocking stuffers, this one and this one would be great for those fact-driven kiddos! I can’t even tell you how many random facts I get from Harrison every day and these will add to his round up.
If geography is your kiddo’s love language, there are so many great kid atlas options out there, this one is great for new lovers of geography. This one and this one are great follow ups.
Our Echo Dot Kids Version gets the most use when Harrison needs to know what the population of Libya is or how many miles are between Japan and New Zealand. Highly recommend so you can learn right along with your kiddo!
Dogman is really popular for this age group and new one just came out!
For The Kid Who Likes To Be Cozy
Whether he’s reading or playing games, this comfy bean bag chair will be a bit hit. I’ll even grab one for my 6-year-old.
These rainbow Vans are functional for a busy kid, comfortable, and super fun.
If you’ve got a sensory sensitive kiddo, they may love these Warmies stuffies that you can heat in the microwave like they’re fresh out of the dryer. You can also put them in the freezer.
I hope this got your wheels turning on gifts for a 8 year old! Let us know in the comments what we forgot!
