Tacos are a way of life around here so this homemade taco seasoning is a must. We eat them at least once a week and they mostly seem to appease every member of our family give or take a picky 5-year-old. I’ve used this homemade taco seasoning on chicken, ground turkey, ground beef and even fish when I was in a pinch–it works with any kind of taco. And don’t just limit yourself to Tuesday, Taco Wednesday or Taco Fridays are totally a thing. 😉
Easier, Cheaper & Better
For the longest time, I bought pre-made taco seasoning at the store. Then, I discovered how easy it is to make your own. When I realized how much cheaper it was to make homemade taco seasoning, I was hooked. I might be biased, but I also think it tastes better than the store bought stuff.
INGREDIENTS FOR HOMEMADE TACO SEASONING
1 tablespoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
INSTRUCTIONS
Toss it all together, store in airtight container. I really like these Ball Leak Proof Lids. Spices are obviously potent, and these contain the smell in the pantry.
I generally use about 2 tablespoons per 1 pound of meat. To be totally honest though, I eyeball the crap out of everything I cook so more or less than that works too.

PERKS
Besides being cheaper and tasting better, you can also make a large batch of the homemade taco seasoning so you always have it on hand then next time you’re in the mood for tacos.
Taste is such a personal thing, which makes the customization of the spice blend perfect. Add extra chili powder or chili flakes if you like spicier, or omit if you don’t. Most store bought seasoning mixes also contain milk, so this is a great dairy free option as well! You can also limit your sodium in take with this recipe. All in all, it’s a much better choice than store bought, and really doesn’t take that much time at all.
