WHO WE TALKED TO
Eileen runs the blog The Autism Cafe. She is a French transplant living in Austin, TX and the mother to two boys, one of which is severely autistic. Through her son’s diagnosis, she determined that is also on the autism spectrum. She uses her unique perspective to put a voice to the isolation and guilt common amongst mothers of autistic children, most recently in her upcoming book. The conversation is featured in the Okayest Moms Summer Series.
You can see Eileen’s incredible photography and listen to her speak candidly about autism on Instagram and Facebook. She has been featured on many different outlets, including Scary Mommy, and she has a book, All Across The Spectrum releasing soon. You can preorder her book here.
WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT
First, we discussed Eileen’s experience as an autistic individual. She talked about what therapy looks like for her as an adult and how her diagnosis provided insight to her childhood. We also talked about the challenges of living with high functioning autism and the struggles she faces.
Then, we moved onto what it’s like to be the mother of an autistic child. Eileen is very open and honest about her experiences, which is so appreciated to anyone in the same position. She also talks about the criticism she’s received for doing so.
THINGS WE MENTIONED
Eileen talked about the MCHAT, an online screening that can be done in home if you suspect your child may have autism. You can find more information about that here.
We also talked about state agencies responsible for early childhood intervention. This information varies by state, but you can find out about California’s regional centers here. This may help point you in the right direction so you know what to look for if you are in another state. They do offer help for all early childhood intervention, not just autism. Your pediatrician could also be a great source of information.
