Ombre Valentine Rice Krispie Treats

If you’re looking for a treat to blow your New Year’s resolution, look no further. These Valentine Rice Krispie Treats are just the thing to get you in the valentine spirit!

I took the traditional Rice Krispie Treat recipe and put a festive spin on it. These aren’t hard to make, so no sweat if you’re not much of a baker. The steps are basically melt this with this and mix it with this. Easy, right? Making these would be a great way to get your kids in the kitchen to fill a rainy or snowy afternoon!

My original thought was to make these ombre. They didn’t quite turn out that way, but you get the idea. I divided the recipe into thirds (I eyeballed it.) The first layer I left the usual color and pressed into the pan. My pan was slightly bigger than I needed, but since I was planning to cut out hearts anyway, it wasn’t that big of a deal.

Then, I did another third and dyed it pink. Next, I layered it over the bottom layer. It was easier to spread the layer when it was still warm, but easier to pack it down when it was cooler. Getting this timing just right so you don’t end up with a Rice Krispie blob was the trickiest part.

Then, repeat with the red layer. I took out the layers and used a rolling pin and parchment paper to flatten and bind the layers together. Cut out the hearts, drizzle with white candy coating and sprinkles and you’re all set!

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 cups miniature marshmallows
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal

Instructions

  1. 1. Melt 1 tablespoon butter and 1 1/3 cup marshmallows in a large sauce pan over low heat. When completely melted remove from heat. Mix in 1 cup of cereal.
  2. 2. Press mixture into a greased baking pan. I found that pressing in the mixture by hand was the best. Since it will be layered, you want to make sure each layer is packed in well.
  3. 3. Repeat step 1, adding pink food coloring. I went a little heavy with the pink, which ruined the ombre look, so I recommend going easy if you want a true ombre. Press into the baking pan over the white layer.
  4. 5. Repeat step 1 again, adding red food coloring. Press into the baking pan over the pink layer.
  5. 6. Take the treats out of the baking pan and place between two sheets of wax paper. Use a rolling pin or the bottom side of the baking pan to press the layers together. This will compact all the layers, making sure they stick together when cut.
  6. 7. Optional step: Use a heart shaped cookie cutter to cut out the treats. My cookie cutter was pretty big, so I only got 6 Rice Krispie Treats. These could also be cut into squares if you don't have a cookie cutter.
  7. 8. Optional step: melt white chocolate and drizzle on top of the Rice Krispy Treats. Add sprinkles for an even more festive look!
