Today is World Autism Awareness Day. I was recentl Today is World Autism Awareness Day. I was recently thinking about how Okayest Moms started and how it’s evolved as Brittany and I have changed and our kids have gotten older.
.
When we started, autism was a big part of my life. It felt all consuming. But four years after Isla’s autism diagnosis and it’s something I almost seldom think about. I don’t know if that’s because I’ve learn to take it in stride and gotten more confident parenting a child on the autism spectrum, or because as she gets older it feels less important to put a label on things.
.
Sharing this part of my life is getting trickier as she gets older. My goal is to always share the reality of motherhood, particularly as it relates to parenting a child with special needs. But, as Isla gets older, the line between her privacy and my experience as her mother becomes even finer. I never want her to look back and be embarrassed or upset that I shared something on the Internet. It is her story to tell, and one of the only blessings of a silent disability is that she has the luxury of choosing to disclose it.
.
So, while I have taken a step back from sharing often, I know that there are many mothers who cannot. Autism is a spectrum, and while Isla falls on the “high functioning” side, I know that is partly why autism doesn’t take up so much space in our lives. My goal will always be to advocate for autistics, hold space for the families who are deeply effected every moment of every day, and also to educate others that autism looks different on everyone.
