Are you wondering where to go for spring break in Northern California? 2021 might still be the year of the pandemic, but road trips can still happen fairly easily. There might be a few less attractions open, and you will need to take a few extra precautions, but your family can still have a fun getaway for spring break!
Some of these spring break destinations will depend on your level of Covid comfort. However, as the vaccine is rolling out, we know people will have different comfort levels. We have a little something no matter your level of Covid precaution. Plus, it will give you ideas for when we are able to travel freely again.
Spring break in northern california: day trips
Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is a great day trip destination. From thrill seeker to animal lover, there is something for everyone in your family. Discovery Kingdom is located in Vallejo, CA and is a great destination for the Sacramento area and further north, as well as Bay Area cities.
Looking for more adrenaline? California’s Great America has tons of roller coasters, Peanuts characters, and a water park. It is located in Santa Clara, CA, so would be ideal for Bay Area, and Central California.
Spring break in northern California: overnight trips
San Francisco is a great option for an overnight trip, especially with kids. Attractions might be limited right now, but you can still make the most of your hotel experience. Plus, there is plenty of open space to go exploring in Golden Gate Park.
Needing some vitamin sea? Monterey is a great family friendly option. Double check if attractions like the Monterey Bay Aquarium are open, or operating with limited hours before you leave. Even still, just a day at the beach is always a fun adventure.
If you’re looking for an adults only weekend, wine country is always a great choice. We love Sonoma County. It has a more casual vibe than it’s neighbor Napa Valley, but the wine, scenery, and amenities are just as satisfying.

It’s no secret that we love Disneyland. It’s a great day or weekend trip from Southern California, or a manageable road trip from Northern California. There have been rumors it will be opening soon, making it a highly sought after spring break 2021 destination. Here is my favorite hotel in walking distance to Disneyland. If you are after warm weather, San Diego is your best bet. This Southern California city is the ultimate beach location, and is perfect for younger kids. There are so many attractions, from the San Diego Zoo, Legoland, and of course, some of the best beaches.

Northern California is such a treasure trove of destinations. Obviously, this list isn’t exhaustive- there are so many good spots! There really is an option for everyone for spring break in Northern California in 2021, no matter your budget or comfortability with traveling in a pandemic. The last year or so has been so hard on so many of us, and getting out of the daily routine to get some new scenery can be so refreshing and good for the soul.
